The Inner City Parish Church is the oldest church in Pest. There was a little church here in which in 1046 Bishop Gellért was buried. Although the nave and towers have remained in Baroque style the choir reveals the Gothic influence.



Matthias Church

Matthias church is also known as Church of Our Lady and Coronation Church. The church, which was built in the time of King Béla IV, is one of the principal sights of the Hungarian capital. It was rebuilt in its present form between 1874 and 1896.

The church is of monumental proportions with a central dome, 96m high, and two 80m high towers at the west end. Building began in 1851. The plans were largely the work of Josef Hild. Magnificent works of art adorn the interior.



Franciscan Church

Franciscan Church dates from the first half of the 18th century, and it is built in Baroque style. The interior of this single-aisled church has a magnificent High Altar and richly furnished side altars. A special treasure is the wooden pulpit with the Twelve Apostles.

Pest Synagogue was built in the last century . The romanticised Moorish-Byzantine style of this three-aisled temple is very pleasing. The Jewish Museum is housed in an annexe of the synagogue.
