Castle Palace

Castle Palace of Buda occupies the southern spur of Castle Hill. The extensive buildings are the former residence of the Hungarian kings. A great part of the palace buildings today appear in new splendour and provide room for important museums and other cultural facilities. The first castle was built by King Béla IV in the 13th century.



Fishermen's Bastion

The Fishermen's Bastion was built on Castle Hill behind the Matthias Church between 1895 and 1902. The Bastion was designed by F. Schulek. From the bastion there is a beautiful panorama over the city.

On the south side of the square stands the Central Market Hall, built in Neo-Gothic style. Even arts and crafts, textiles can be obtained here.



Turbe of Gül Baba

In Mecset utca can be found the Turbe of a Muslim Dervish Gül Baba (turkish = rose father), which was built between 1543 and 1548. Gül Baba died during a festival in the Matthias Church which had been converted into a mosque.

The Parliament Building (constructed between 1885 and 1902) is situated between Kossuth Lajos ter and the Danube. The building in 268m long, 118m wide. The imposing facade on the bank of the Danube is embellished with eighty-eight statues including Hungarian hereditary princes, military leaders and kings.

The castle was built in 1896 on the occasion of the millennium festival. The greater part of the building complex was designed on the model of the castle ( present-day Romanian town of Hunedoara)of the Turkish conqueror Hunyadi.

This Baroque castle was commissioned in the middle of the 18th c. For some time it has been used as a cultural centre.

The Citadel was built by the Austrians after 1851. The building is more than 200m long and up to 60m wide. Now there is a hotel, restaurant and museum in the building.
