Thermal Baths and Spas

     In Hungary about 1,5 million cubic metres of curative waters gush to the surface daily, from nearly 500 springs whose waters are good for bathing and for drinking cures. In Budapest 123 registered thermal springs service 32 baths of which 9 are officially recognised as spas.

Gellert Thermal Baths

There was a spa here as early as the 13th century, when the thermal waters of Gellert Hill were used for medicinal purposes. After its renovation Gellért Thermal Baths are one of the finest of its kind in Budapest.

They were the property in the last century of a family named King (Király). The oldest part of the building was built in 1570 under Mustafa Pasa.

The Lukács Baths were extended many times from 1760 to onwards. To the south of Lukacs Baths is the famous institute of Physiotherapy and Rheumatology.

Rac Thermal Baths

The Rac Baths were established and extended in the Turkish period. The medicinal springs were known as early as the 15th century.

The Rudas Baths are located at the foot of the Gellért Hill, near the Elisabeth Bridge. The thermal springs here were already in use in the Middle Ages.

The complex of the Szechenyi Baths is situated in the northern part of Varosliget. The 70C warm water comes from a spring discovered in the 20th century.
